4 Resolutions for your Home You Can Keep

Home Sweet Home Showing Welcome Friendly Invitation New Year's resolutions for the homeIt’s that time of year of again: the time when we make promises for improvement in the New Year. We’ve all heard (or made) the most common New Year’s resolutions: losing weight, saving money, eating better. And while it is fun to follow the crowd, are you looking for a resolution focused on “where the heart is,” your home? Or are you looking for a New Year’s resolution that you can (actually) keep? If so, we’ve compiled a list of New Year’s resolutions that you can mark off your list easily—and be proud of the results.

I will put install new flooring myself!

DIY laminate floorFor friends of ours, the “straw that broke the camel’s back” was the last Jell-o stain from their young children’s dessert. They were tired of the neutral-colored carpet in their dining room, and sick of cleaning up the spills. They decided to install laminate because the flooring could take the daily messes, and dinner messes that go with toddlers and children. Once they were sure of their flooring decision, they ripped up the old floor and installed their new, easier-to-clean laminate flooring in just a day.

If you’ve been wishing for new flooring for a long time, and have some basic handyman skills or a lean budget, consider flooring you can install yourself, such as laminate or luxury vinyl plank flooring (there are other options we’ve listed here). Consult the experts before you buy your DIY flooring to make sure the type of floor works well for your space and for any tips for installation. If you are buying for a large space, consider purchasing a large quantity of flooring at a discount.

I will add value to my home.

wood flooringThere are many different ways to tackle this New Year’s resolution—but the key is to finish whatever project you start. Commonly, a project is only included in an assessment of your home if the project is done. Projects that add value include (but are not limited to) bathroom and kitchen remodels, finishing a basement or attic, or adding wood floors to your home. If you decide to take on any of these projects, consult your local flooring experts to make sure you choose the flooring that works for your project; there are different flooring products that work better in certain areas, such in a finished basement.

I will get my carpets cleaned.

A professional carpet cleaning can give your carpet a deep clean beyond any spot cleaning. We’re not talking about renting a cleaner from the store; a professional carpet cleaning goes beyond, removing all the stains you can see and can’t see. If you have allergies or other respiratory issues, you should have your carpets cleaned on a regular basis to remove any allergens for your home. The best part of a professional cleaning is you get results without having to lift a finger (or dump dirty water or…). Just pick up the phone and schedule a carpet cleaning with a local carpet cleaner with experience and a good track record. Effortless and done—and a New Year’s resolution you can check off the list easily.

I will finish my basement.

An unfinished (waterproofed!) basement is a space full of potential. It’s just waiting to be turned into a family room, game room, bedroom, work shop…whatever you want it to be. If your basement is like most American homes, your basement walls and floor is concrete. Though durable and affordable, concrete is porous, allowing moisture to seep through the floor and walls. Because of this, one flooring not recommended for basements is solid wood flooring. Don’t fret; there are other options with the look of wood, without the buckling and warping that can occur because of moisture in a basement. Engineered hardwood, vinyl plank flooring, carpet and laminate both can be installed in basements without any chance of warping. If you have any questions about any of these kinds of floors, or want to see your options so you can get the job started, stop in at any of our Y’s Way Flooring locations. We’ll help you get your New Year’s resolution started, so you can get it done—and marked off of your list.

10 Tips for Keeping Your Wood Floors Beautiful Through the Winter

protecting wood floorsHardwood floors are one of the most durable flooring options, and also one of the vulnerable during our Wisconsin winters. With all the time and money you’ve invested in your wood floors, you don’t want to “throw them to the wolves”: the parties, snow, ice, traffic and seasonal décor. It’s true; winter can be your solid wood floor’s enemy—if you don’t take precautionary steps to keep them beautiful:

Sweep daily to clean up the debris that could scratch the floors.

Put rugs by all your doors to keep the snow out.

Wipe up spills immediately.

Add felt pads to all your chairs and furniture (including folding chairs).

Be careful when moving furniture so you don’t scratch your floors.

Have guests remove their shoes so they don’t track water and gravel in.

Don’t steam clean your wood floors (read why here).

Use the recommended cleaning products.

Follow cleaning instructions to a “T” so you don’t void the warranty.

Put protectors (mats, rugs, etc.) under dog crates and holiday trees to protect your floors.

5 Holidays Gifts Perfect for YOU!

holiday home giftsSometimes we feel like we need a holiday to recover from the holidays. All the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, shopping, wrapping, tree decorating…by the time the holiday parties are done, it feels like we need a reward for all the effort we put into the holidays. If you’re feeling tapped out, and are looking for the perfect after-holiday gift, we’ve got one of these suggestions:

Carpet cleaning

Tired of scrubbing all the soda and wine spills off the carpet from your holiday parties? Schedule a carpet cleaning after all the holiday gatherings are done. You’ll have clean carpets without having to lift a finger, and a chance to relax in a clean house.

Updated kitchen

You’ve been cooking in your outdated kitchen all holiday season, so why not go into the New Year with a kitchen you look forward to cooking in next year? Look into updated kitchen counter tops and a backsplash that gives your kitchen the finishing touch you’ve been dreaming of.

Man cave

Add flooring, if needed, and blinds so you can see the TV. Need a break from home projects after preparing your home for the holidays? Contact the professionals to install blinds so you can enjoy your new man space.

Easy to clean floors

For one of our customers, the last holiday season with carpet in their dining room was one holiday season too many. They were tired of the jello stains from their young children, and sick of trying to keep it clean. If you can identify with their plight, and have a hard-to-clean floor of your own, it may be time to investigate a new, easier-to-clean for your home. We’d suggest laminate, wood or luxury vinyl floors which are MUCH easier to clean in high traffic areas. If you want to save money on labor, look into a DIY flooring option.

Family room

After the holidays, it’s easy to get cabin fever once it becomes clear that the cold weather and snow isn’t going away any time soon. That’s why winter is an ideal time to finish your basement (find out what floors can be installed in a basement here), so your whole family can enjoy the gift that keeps giving: a hangout room.

If you have any questions about flooring (or backsplash options) or want to schedule a carpet cleaning appointment, contact us. We’ll help you make your holiday even jollier so you can feel rewarded for all that effort.
